St Nicholas Early Education celebrates Book Week 2019

Each year across Australia, children, families, educators, libraries and more come together to celebrate Book Week [17-23 August], an event which celebrates children’s literature.

The theme of Book Week 2019 was ‘Reading is My Secret Power’, so the children and educators of St Nicholas Early Education Raymond Terrace took the opportunity to dress up as their favourite book characters in-line with this year’s theme.

What does Book Week look like at St Nick’s

The celebration at St Nick’s Raymond Terrace included a character parade, in which the children had the opportunity to show off their costumes and the books on which they are based.

Present at the parade were Spiderman, Elsa of ‘Frozen’, Michelangelo of ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’, and Toothless of ‘How to Train Your Dragon’, just to name a few.

As an added bonus, the children were able to share their favourite stories with their friends and educators during group times.

The benefits of reading

Book Week is an initiative designed to encourage children’s excitement towards reading. Children’s engagement in reading from a young age helps them to:

-   recognise sounds, words and language, and develop early literacy skills;

-       learn the value of books and stories;

-       develop a sense of imagination and curiosity;

-       grow their social and communication skills, and

-   understand their thoughts and emotions.
