Working at St Nicholas Early Education: Lynette
Lynette is an educator at St Nicholas Early Education Lochinvar and the Room Leader of their ‘Wipi’ Room.
With around 20 years’ experience in the early childhood industry, she still credits St Nick’s as her favourite working environment to date.
“I really love working for St Nicholas,” she says. “They are so inclusive, we have a really great team and I have to say that I’ve never been happier working in a child care centre than I am at St Nicholas.”
Programming based off of children’s interests
St Nicholas provides a curriculum and program that is centred on play-based learning, influencing children’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical development. It is the aim of St Nicholas to provide an integrated curriculum that promotes holistic practices which are developmentally appropriate, and supportive of children’s different learning capabilities and styles.
“We have a big interest with insects at the moment,” Lynette says as an example. “That all begun when we saw a cricket outside and the children all gathered around the cricket, so we took a few photos of it, one of the educators put it on her hand and our interest for insects grew from there. That all relates to the idea at St Nick’s that we program off the children’s interests.”
Play-based, child-centred learning experiences such as this help children at St Nicholas develop a range of skills and processes such as problem-solving, inquiry, experimentation, hypothesising, researching and investigating, with regard to themselves and their world.
