The Transition to School Program at St Nicholas Early Education Raymond Terrace

At St Nicholas Early Education Raymond Terrace, the educators understand the transition from an early education environment into primary school is not the only transition children will experience in their lives. It is with this in mind that St Nick’s  implements a proactive approach to ensure the transition to “big school” is a seamless one where each child’s well-being is nurtured and supported.

Since the centre opened its doors in late January, St Nick’s Raymond Terrace has made a number of positive connections with the surrounding community - one of those connections being with local primary schools.

Throughout the year, St Nick’s educators will be taking children from the preschool room to visit local primary schools as part of the children’s regular excursions into the community and the Transition to School Program.

Preparing for primary school life at St Nicholas Early Education Raymond Terrace

The goal of the Transition to School Program at St Nicholas Raymond Terrace is to make the transition into primary school exciting and less daunting for each child. The visits to primary schools prepare children for some of the things they will experience in their day-to-day lives once they enter primary school including the uniforms they will wear, the layout of the school they will attend, the nature of the playground, how the canteen works and other challenges they will encounter.

According to Brydee, an Educator at St Nick’s Raymond Terrace, “In the preschool room we still use a play-based learning approach. However, we are using our group times to incorporate some early literacy skills. Our room is designed to foster early literacy and mathematics.

“With that, we talk about colours, we talk about numbers, we talk about the formation of numbers, counting and different types of texts. We talk about the authors of stories, illustrators and their roles, pre-literacy and how to read from left to right.”

Transition to School vs School Readiness

The Transition to School Program is central to the preschool program at St Nicholas Early Education.

Unlike traditional school-readiness programs, St Nick’s Transition to School Program incorporates preparedness for school in a program with an emphasis on the continuity of change and relationship building.

St Nick’s Transition to School Program sees transition as a process rather than something to be anticipated, managed and completed. It is ongoing and open ended.

While school readiness involves the development of essential learning skills, prepares children for school-entry assessments and builds independence by teaching self-help skills, St Nick’s Transition to School Program builds on school readiness and goes further. It does this by focusing on the process of educational transition and views this as a process for all - not just the child.
